FC Ukraine United defeated Brantford Galaxy 3-0 to draw level on points with top-of-the-table Vorkuta in the only CSL First Division match played Saturday.
It was a well-played encounter in the first half when Ukraine United took a 2-0 lead at Centennial Stadium, followed by a more physical second half and a late third goal which put the game out of reach for the Galaxy.
It was a foul in the box that caused referee Afsar Khan to point to the penalty spot in the first half and Ukraine United midfielder Ihor Malysh scored his sixth of the season, driving the ball out of reach of Brantford goalkeeper Georgi Jovicic for the 1-0 lead.
A breakaway put Ukraine forward Nazar Milishchuk in the clear to make it 2-0, his seventh goal of the season, and a low drive from 16 yards by substitute Pavlo Lukianets at 76 minutes made it 3-0, the score at the final whistle. It was Lukianets’ eighth goal to lead Ukraine United in the scoring.
FC Ukraine United improve to a 9-2-2 WLT record for 29 points, while Brantford Galaxy are at 1-7-2 for five points in eighth position in the table.
Ukraine United and FC Vorkuta are tied with 29 points, seven points clear of third team Scarborough with 22.
Ukraine United has three games remaining in the 16-game regular season schedule, while FC Vorkuta has four games to complete its regular season. These two teams meet at Esther Shiner Stadium on September 1st @ 7pm.
